Mosquito Creek

Mosquito Creek

About:
Mosquito creek, yes with mosquitoes! But it was already September when I took this, so they weren't a real bother. This shot was not planned at all, that night I wanted to stay at the Lake Louise Campground but the queue was more than 500m long and there was a definite smell of forest fire. I didn't want to queue there so I turned around and drove to Mosquito Creek campground and was tired of driving around so I disciplined myself that evening to take some rest and relax and only shoot picture in walking distance of the camper.
That's how this shot happened.

Location:
Mosquito Creek Campground, Banff NP, Alberta, Canada

Dome glacier

Dome glacier

About:
When driving past the Columbia Icefields center I was struck by the colors beside the road, the short grass was getting all red and yellow, so I stopped to take a picture, but to be honest the picture doesn't do real justice to the sight I had, I have to try harder next time, nevertheless I still think is nice picture with on the background the Dome Glacier, one of the many glaciers from the Columbia Icefield

Location:
Columbia Icefields Center, Jasper NP, Alberta, Canada
This image is also geotagged

Technical stuff:
Exposure: 1/80 sec at f/14 at -1 EV
Taken with: Nikon D300S and 18-200 mm f/3.5-6.3 at 52mm
HDR from 7 shots, merged in Photomatix, tonemapped in Oloneo and than cropped in LR to semi square to get a nice view

Beauty Creek

Beauty Creek

About:
The day started out rather grey (see picture in first comment, at that moment it was getting better already). So to counter the grey sky I took the walk along the Beauty Creek canyon, for which sky doesn't matter. After 45 minutes of walking I reach the top of the canyon with a beautiful waterfall right to the right of this picture and when all of a sudden the sky started to open-up, I saw the sun bursting through the tree and had to act quickly before I would loose this pov and the sun would be in the picture, which I did.

Firing of 7 shots, re-positioned a little and another 7 shots and that was it, no good pov possible without the sun in the frame.

Location:
Beauty Creek, along Icefields Parkway, Alberta, Canada
This image is also geotagged

Technical stuff:
Exposure: 1/40 sec at f/22 at -1 EV
Taken with: Nikon D300S and 18-200 mm f/3.5-6.3 at 18mm
7 bracketed shots merged in Photomatix, tonemapped in Oloneo
The resulting image still lacked a bit of punch which I added with several layers of levels/saturation and masks to come to this.
- boosted green/yellow on the main trees
- boosted blues in the sky
- warm filter on foreground
- extra contrast on the foreground
- Highpass sharpening

Non classic view of Peyto Lake

Non classic view of Peyto Lake

About:
The first time I visited Peyto Lake I walk to the viewing platform took my wide angle shot and saw that it was a rather classic view of Peyto Lake, so I looked out for another view wandering around I found a nice boulder field just beneath the platform, there I was distracted by the little ground squirrels moving around. This was on the way to Jasper, I read about the walk to Bow Valley Summit but didn't find it that day...

On the way back from Jasper I stopped here again, now I read the instructions carefully how to get to the Bow Valley Summit walk which will give me a nice view over Bow Lake, I hoped that when returning I would get a non classical view of Peyto Lake. Just for the people who never been there: Bow Lake and Peyto lake are not far apart (look at the map of this picture), the Bow Valley summit walk starts at the parking lot of Peyto Lake and takes about 1 hour to get to the end and it climbs a fair amount, that's why I hoped to get another angle on Peyto Lake, and indeed when returning I saw the lake, but it wasn't a nice composition, I saw however a path leading up (again) so I took it and arrived at this spot where I took this picture. And I got my not classical view of Peyto Lake! For the record there is also a nice spot to take pictures on that road you see on the right bottom corner, this spot gives a bigger view of Peyto Lake, I'll post the link of Jocy's picture in the first comment that I suspect was taken there.

For the record I shot a panorama too here :)

Peyto Lake, Banff National Park, Alberta, Canada

Technical stuff:
Exposure: 1/80 sec at f/8,0 at -2/3 EV
Taken with: Nikon D300S and 18-200 mm f/3.5-6.3 at 18mm
My normal HDR workflow: merged in Photomatix, tonemapped in Oloneo, high pass sharpening in PS. On this one I tamed the yellows a little on the foreground

First competition win

First competition win

About:
Last year I participated in a competition held by Odyssee travel guides (www.odyssee-reisgidsen.nl/index.html) a company who publishes travel guide in pdf format with a twist, you can order only the parts you really need.
From all the participants I came out as winner with the above picture (link to real picture in first post), the price was the picture on Canvas. It's not very large, but for me winning was more rewarding than the price itself.

And on top if all: I'm joing Paul and Anna Isle of Skye workshop, and we´re staying on the foot of these hills, so I can enjoy them again

Location:
Quiraing, Isle Of Skye, Scotland

Technical stuff:
