@thepres6 - Thank you, love your stream. @Troy - Now I want a Guinness. Thanks for
reminding me. =D @Clarity - There are some excellent photos of
latte etching and latte art on flickr.
Baristas at certain cafes take great pride in
their designs, as well they should. Thank
you. @marcusrg - Word. Thanks. @Girlabroad - Ha, cool, hadn't seen that.
Cheers!
@Domain Barnyard - Thanks! @scribe - Ha, thank you. You know the table
had perfectly spaced dots. I was originally
going to photograph the cup outside and
looked down and thought "hmmmmmmm".
simple yet effective, to think that some
could predict the future by look at a cup
like that. I don't know how to do that. I
find the picture a bit "flat", then
maybe that's what was indended...
The cup should be at the third intersection.
Also notice the bottom to mid right of your
picture where there is some flare. It breaks
the consistency of your background which
distracts the eye. I think you must have used
flash. Might have been better if the flash
was switched off. It'll avoid the flat look
and the glare.
Very cool! The colours fit very well together
and I like the negative space on the lefthand
side, although I think that could be just a
little bit less. Like 1.5 cm less or so.
Wow - like an abstract planet and stars. I'm
happy with the composition and the overall
flat look of the image. (If you crop the cup to a square, you can get
a bonus squared circle out of it as well...)
I see the flower in the drink, but I really
prefer my cappuccino flowers to be in focus.
Because the drink is kind of bubbly it is
hard to judge the focus, but the lip of the
cup gives it away. The pattern on the
table is moderately interesting, but nothing
to write home about. Rating #6:
1: there is a tiny bit of diamond from the
table peeking out from the upper right of the
cup. I think the cup could have been
positioned more carefully
2: the glare from the light source on the
right detracts from the abstraction and
simplicity the photo almost obtains.
A nice minimalist feel (I love coffee to a
sinful degree also). I find no connection to
the focus, its just a circle in the plane of
wood panelling. I would prefer to see a
little bit of cup in this composition. Also
maybe a lipstick mark on the edge, something
to draw me in.
@100 Points Group - Thanks for all your
thoughtful feedback. I saw the focus problem
and partial dot sticking out from under the
cup myself, but missed the brightness at
right. I'll have to go back for another cup
this weekend with all the advice (and
lipstick) in hand. Thanks again for your
time everyone, much appreciated.
There are an infinite number of different
ways of shooting this sort of shot, so I
wouldn't worry too much about what didn't
work in this one - the important thing is
that it looks interesting, on various levels.
For me, the brightness adds texture to the
surface - a completely evenly lit brown would
be less representative of the seen, and
potentially less interesting.
But definitely shoot more variations if you
get chance.
@scribe - Thanks! I will absolutely make a
return to the cafe, but probably not for a
couple of weeks. Hopefully I get a barista
who can top the flower. =D

The coffee cream looks ... yummy and sharp :) Nice aranged with the big part of the table on the right.
Looks a little bit like a sky with moon and stars.

Love the composition, but it seems the focus is on the wood and not the cup. Also, some lighting issues. Still, nice capture.

A couple things make this not quite work for me:
1: there is a tiny bit of diamond from the table peeking out from the upper right of the cup. I think the cup could have been positioned more carefully
2: the glare from the light source on the right detracts from the abstraction and simplicity the photo almost obtains.

nicely composed, the table getting brighter towards the right takes from the whole night sky appeal for me
rim of cup seems overexposed
