Fantastic shot! I agree with lilskibumm, the fact that you can see the cloud detail and the subject so nicely lit, make this a great shot! I'm finally starting to learn how to balance flash and ambient light thanks to you!

Nah, I am just picking up some Varsity features to stay shooting and do some OA's. Also doing a self-generated project that I will be talking about later.

(Shot this with a Canon G9, BTW.)

Wow! From a G9? i definitely have to get one now for the concerts I can't take my 30D into. I talked my brother into getting a G9, glad I didn't steer him wrong.

Pretty harsh shadow under her nose, though!

Really nice environmental portrait. Also, your blog post was very informative and useful. Do you have any good BW conversion techniques? While I think her face looks great, the rest looks just a bit muddy to me. I'm still trying to get the richness of traditional darkroom prints in my digital BW images.

What makes the shot great is not:

      The detail in the clouds...

      or even the lighting.

What makes this an outstanding portrait is:

How her face expresses real joy, and how her body language, and even that little wisp of flying hair reinforce that sense of joy.

After that it is the composition and framing. And after that there is the dramatic lighting and the tonal relationships

I had a similar athlete shot. The story was on his track accomplishments.

A great use of the Canon G9 "pocket" camera.

That's Great! did you use a wireless flash on the side ? your key light is not as the same direction as the sun and I would love to know how you do that!

Love this photo, has a setting that anyone could provided the clouds cooperate. Will be trying this with my students.
