St Bernard , fire watcher

St Bernard's Mill, Gildersome was built in the late 1700's/early 1800's. Its rather remote location, between Leeds and the village of Gildersome meant that shortly after opening a row of cottages were built to house key mill workers.
The St Bernard has kept watch over the mill from his vantage point on the roof for two centuries, ready to alert it's owners in the event of fire.

I've lived in or around Leeds for most of my life and never realised that so many old and interesting buildings are still standing. People get so wrapped up in their own fast-paced lifestyle that all the important and interesting stuff gets forgotten. Great job on keeping them alive :)

Thanks Stuart. It's amazing what is around still. So many people go around with their eyes shut! It was a nice discovery (so to speak) which very little history seems to exist about online.

My ancestors (late 1700's) worked in there! And lived in the row of cottages.

Wow! There is not a lot left of it now, just the front bit, as much of it has been demolished. I hope they are keeping the remaining bit.

I know. I hope he is saved and will appear in a museum or similar soon.
