river otter

I finally got out with my camera today. Seems like I'm running into more river otters these days than birds to photograph. This fellow was at Clover Point and he let me get within about 20 feet of him as he was frolicking on the rocks. He did not seem to mind me being there as I moved around getting many shots of him. Photo taken at Clover Point in Victoria, British Columbia.

American Dippers are not too common a bird in the Victoria area. They are at home in cold rushing streams where they plunge for insect larvae under stones or in the streambed. When not foraging they watch from a log or rock constantly bobbing up and down. They have a length of 7 1/2 inches ( 19cm), a wingspan of 11 inches (28cm) and can live up to 7 years. This photo was taken at Goldstream Provincial Park in Victoria, British Columbia.

Sharon and I ran into this river otter today while looking for birds. It was eating a crab when we found it. Twice after eating the crab it would swim out and catch another crab and come in and eat them as well. It was very interesting to watch.
