Yellow Mongoose - Cynictis penicillata

Yellow Mongoose - Cynictis penicillata

I had an opportunity to visit the Marievale Bird Sanctuary last week again, and was happy to find the same family of Yellow Mongooses whom I had photographed some time ago.
I loved the curiosity of this one, standing up on its hind legs scanning the surrounding vegetation for danger.

Malachite Kingfisher juv. - Alcedo c. cristata

Malachite Kingfisher juv. - Alcedo c. cristata

This is one of the more common kingfisher species in South Africa and certain places provide perfect opportunities of photographing them.

This is one of 3 juvenile birds that were seen on the day. The adult bird is brighter in colour and has a bright orange/red beak.

Yellow-fronted Tinkerbird - Pogoniulus c. extoni

Yellow-fronted Tinkerbird - Pogoniulus c. extoni

Heard of this Yellow-fronted Tinkerbird nest through a friend, and thought I would try and find it and hopefully get a few shots.

Found the nest, but had terrible light to work with as it was overcast for most of the morning. I just couldn't get the shutter speed up without having a lot of noise to deal with.

Sadly this is the only pic I feel worthy of sharing.

African Stonechat - Saxicola torquatus stonei

African Stonechat - Saxicola torquatus stonei

A blast from the past. Was going through some of my images from a few years ago, and thought this would be a worthwhile addition to my photostream.

Hope you like it.

Red-collared Widowbird - Euplectes ardens

Red-collared Widowbird - Euplectes ardens

Another Widowbird in breeding plumage. Personally I would have rather called this the Cut-throat Widowbird, but of course Red-collared is also very descriptive.

This species does not have as long tails as their cousins the Long-tailed Widowbird, but are nevertheless just as spectacular to see.
