This isn't a true darkfield. I'm expanding my technique a little bit.
It was lit as a yellow gelled darkfield against brown but was also lit from the front left side with a blue gelled diffusion panel and a cookie. I messed with the brown background using the healing brush then I tweaked the hues a bit in Apple Aperture.
I thought the two colours worked as a team pretty good.
I should have increased the DOF to bring in the lid on the tea pot.
Oh well…
There's always next time.

Very neat effect. Even though you expressed dissatisfaction with it, the depth of field looks good to me.
