Soldiers from the 7th US Army carry the priceless artworks down the steps of Meunschwanstein Castle where hoards of European art treasures, stolen by the Nazis, were hidden during World War II.

He never did liberate Europe (at least, the Earth-2 Superman didn't get to-Hitler used the Spear of Longinus to prevent Superman from ever entering Europe and putting an end to the Axis) When the Axis was defeated and the Spear's powers negated, Superman got to Europe and saw what had happened, including the concentration camps. he made his own vow of never again similar to the Jewish community's vow, and got involved later in life with a plot of Alexander Luthor's to create perfection on the remaining Earth of the old (1986-2006) single Earth continuity, as seen in the Infinite Crisis mini-series/graphic novel.

There was a very old comic strip by the creators of Superman called "How Superman Would End the War" written in the 30s before America had gotten into WW2. It shows Superman doing exactly what we all wanted him to do, first he flies to Germany and kicks every Nazi ass in Hitler's palace, then he pulls old Schnickelfritz out of there by the waist of his pants. Then he flies to Russia and repeats the act with Stalin, finally he drops them both in a jail cell in Switzerland.

That's the American soldiers finding them. They were stolen from France during the war.

Those soldiers were from the Monuments, Fine Arts, and Archives program within the Civil Affairs branch of the army and "were cultural heritage professionals, most of whom were already serving in the military either as draftees or volunteers. Gathered in special teams, they were dedicated to salvaging, preserving, and, after the war, repatriating cultural property damaged or looted during the war."
