Look away if you're that type

He didn't make it - he was gathered up and euthanized due to his broken leg, and having fallen from the nest / or being pushed...

Rest in peace, little one. Nature's lessons are sometimes the most difficult for humans to accept.

Damn. And you made the right call in posting... not all great work is about beauty. It's the hunched body language and the flies that get me. Choosing to color only his eye was brilliant.

Aw... that's a real shame. It's too bad that he was not eligible for recovery and rehab.

Such is the way - and this is a sensitive expression on your part.

Poor little one, I feel so sad for hi. Why couldn't they take him to a rehab center?

Wonderful nature shot. Too bad he did not make it, but that is the way mother nature works.

So sad, but that's how nature works. Survival of the fittest.

Excellent job on the treatment too Jon, that yellow eye really touches the emotions.

      Jon,
Sorry to hear about this little guy. Something about his expression captures the sadness of the moment.

some times I come back to my own work, and have to sigh. At the time, when I took this, my urge was "get help", but it was also "omg I have to capture this".

I'd never seen or even knew about the euthanasia angle that black-crowned night herons employ, apparently regularly at the national zoo. I heard at its peak the zoo finds something like 20 dead or dying bcnh's per day!!! That's nuts. but the flock is huge, and the number of nests is pretty high. And this is the ONLY colony of BCNH's in Washington D.C.

Many of the zoo's herons have already started to move on now, I was there a couple weeks ago and saw some bcnh's but not a bajillion like there were 2 months ago.

I'm sure it was a good season for them - regardless of this one fallen bird. but it does bring a tear to my eye......
