Nornen

Nornen

In March 1897, a howling south westerly gale swept up the Bristol Channel, bringing with it high seas, driving snow and sleet. Many ships soon found themselves in distress, among them the Norwegian barque SS Nornen which had tried to ride out the storm in the lee of the Lundy Roads but had found her anchors dragging. She was being driven towards Berrow mud flats. The crew desperately tied to save her, but were fighting a losing cause. The ship's crew of ten, together with their dog were eventually rescued, but this is what became of their boat.

This was shot during a trip with James Clegg to Berrow Beach, Somerset. We arrived just as the tide reached the wreck. It was blowing a gale. I took a few pictures, but this is the only one that didn't suffer from the extreme winds. Weighing down the tripod would have just encouraged it to sink in the wet sand. Under the circumstances, I'm pleased with how it turned out!
