Boulder field

Boulder field

I recall standing around on one of these rocks for what seemed like a very long time to capture this. Admittedly, it was larger than these immediately in front of me, and comfortably covered in snow - but it was certainly a cold experience!

I also made the mistake of making too many exposures - about 10 over an hour. The tide came in during that time and made choosing my favourite of them tricky, as the last few show the boulders barely protruding (as was the one I was standing on, which was a compelling reason to move!). This is one of the first few captures - I should have stopped at that point ... ;-)

The late sunshine gave everything a nice, purple glow, which I rather liked, though I've toned it down a little in this image.

'Slice'

'Slice'

The weather was decidedly variable in Lofoten. Minutes earlier, the backdrop to this was some characteristic, triangular mountains a few kilometres away. By this time, I was actually pleased that the hills disappeared as I'd already captured rather a lot of 'distant big mountain' shots!

I liked the cheese slice / spatula / generic slicey kitchen implement look of the snow-covered sand in this shot, as well as the mountain just disappearing into the falling snow at the far right.

Any hut in a storm

Any hut in a storm

Arguably a less dramatic image than the last couple from Lofoten, but one I'm very pleased with as I liked the isolation of the hut and the atmosphere of the falling snow. I also thought I'd post something with some colour in it ;-) This is the standard, regulation red used in many of the Lofoten settlements.

Just after this was captured, a girl of about 12 or so walked along the beach behind this hut, just above the waterline... she was on her way home from school - things are different in Arctic Norway!

Essence of Lofoten: Olstind + fish

Essence of Lofoten: Olstind + fish

More precisely: 'Olstind plus fish heads'.

Olstind is, in many ways, *the* mountain in the lower half of the Lofoten archipelago / chain of islands. Its triangular bulk presides over the fjord at Reines and offers a great, imposing backdrop from many different vantage points on the chain of roads and bridges.

The foreground here (there's a large tract of water hidden between the foreground and the mountain) is a rack of drying fish heads - nice.... if you like that sort of thing ;-) Fortunately, some societies value dried fish heads as a delicacy, which is good news for the Lofoten fishing community. Lofoten, to me, was predominantly characterised by triangular mountains and drying fish.... hence this composition.

Apostrophe

Apostrophe

My first image from Lofoten, Norway - at least, my first upload.

This is actually one of the more colourful images I made, though not by a long way *the* most colourful. That description goes to something from a morning when the sky was so utterly mad that, even after I've desaturated it somewhat, it still looks [literally] incredible.

Anyway, this was one of my favourite shots - I really liked that sweep of snow-covered beach in the foreground which made the whole scene remind me of an apostrophe, hence the title. Minutes later, it was gone as the tide came in. (It's much better in the 'original' size as Flickr's compression seems to have mildly damaged the small versions :-\ ).

Explore front page, #8, thanks to everyone!
