It's something I've felt strongly about for
ages, and it was nice finding this graphic on
the interwebs. I normally manage to get past
them either by setting the DVD to play 16x or
by claiming to be in some country that
doesn't force anti-consumer propaganda down
your eyes the moment you insert a disc...
doesn't it just make you want to rip the disk
to remove the offensive things.
luckily I have a dvd recorder that let's you
browse the contents of a disc - so you *can*
skip through them.
in t'future I'm guessing that soon you'll
only be able to buy dvd recorders in t'shops
like in the days of vihs recorders - who'd
buy just a video player?
I've done just that on a disc that had such
egregious anti-copying technology that it
barely played on our cheap DVD recorder (but,
unsurprisingly, could be copied on a PC
without issue). It's not just the Piracy ads
you have to sit through as well, it's the
mountain of company idents as well. Pain in
the bum. When I'm watching on a PC I use VLC
which gracefully ignores all the
anti-consumer-freedom data and just plays the
DVD - bliss.
I have a tendency to run purchased dvds
through a rip/burn cycle that strips off all
the anti-consumer rules, and replaces the
anti-piracy ads with pictures of my cats. I
can immediately hit 'title menu', and I have
the original safely tucked away.
