Murder In The Air

Look closely.... you may be surprised!! I sure was.
Please view large!!!

This species of spider waits on the tips of a certain type of plant camouflaging itself amongst the flowers. When an unwitting butterfly approaches for a nectar break... it pounces.

This has to be seen large. How is he going to finish his meal?

Wonderful shot. You may like to post it to 10 seconds pool.

I love shots of spiders eating. I have a bunch in my stream, but none so ambitious or with such a pretty meal.

Great catch, really very nice. I love crab spiders, they're nifty critters. I had a pretty yellow one living on a flower in my front garden for a few weeks earlier in the year. The ground beneath was littered with the carcasses of bees and hoverflies and whatnot that it had snagged.

The background is gaudy...that takes away a bit from the shot. My condolences to the butterfly.

Why so much background? It's a nice, sharp butterfly - show him off. The saturation is a bit OTT.

This is a great capture but I simply hate the way you used the sharpen filter or your camera is nearly dead or you focused with one of these awful pocket cameras... I don't know but I hate to delete it!
    I prefer to abstain...

    surprising and very well performed.

Is the spider 'avin it' then?

Great capture - your pic .. and the spiders

  42. nickehret (80 months ago | reply)

Not up to par with the bug macros we've seen from you in the past. Highlights on the spider and flowers are too bright. The background is poor and distracting. Why is it centered?

I think the surpising nature of the large version is a great plus for a shot submitted to Flickr. Schizoo23 abstained because of what he throught was oversharpening, but I think the left edge of the wing would be aliased if that was true. And it certainly is in focus. Too much background, I am not sure, but it certainly makes the butterfly pop out. Probably going to be a minority, but:

I'm biased by the unusuallness and rarity of a shot like this. . The title disturbs me. Murder is not used "intra-species" unless you are a vegetarian. An iconic crop (as you have done) is less "catchy" here. Barely not safeworthy.

Austin, I agree with you. Besides I think a great part of the beauty of this photo is precisely the wide background. I'd really like to see this picture in the saveme pool.

It's a great shot. Perfect timing and good technique. It's just that I don't find myself coming back to look at it again.
