granny square container

granny square container

for julia bravo.
It was a challenge (for me) to make this from a photo and tiny crochet diagram (scanned from a japanese craft book). I guess any granny square would have worked, but I was hell bent on making the one in the book.

The container seemed too floppy on its own, so I tried blocking it around a plexiglass cube. Not sure if that's better or worse. I think it might need a smaller cube and better blocking from a better blocker-person...

That wonky edge can be fixed with reblocking - I thought the bumps were kind of cute, but now they just look messy. Hmmm. Maybe this guy could have used a round of single crochet across the top edge. Just thought of that now. D'oh!
Sorry, JB :(

100% wool, size H hook.

kitty placemat

kitty placemat

My sister's cat is a messy eater. I have an old hexagon mini quilt that needs a home...
I think Zaza has a new placemat!

Last year (2 years ago?), I did a pretty lame job of finishing this - I just appliqued the hexagon top to some kona cotton and cut away the excess from the back. Did a pillowcase finish with a grey/pale green batik backing and cotton batting.
Hand sewn, hand quilted.

Lots of favorite fabrics in here: "enjoy club," chick dot, flea market fancy, amy butler charm, kaffe...

fabric tiles

fabric tiles

Just playing around with small fabric tiles (got the tile idea from Colourwash Quilts by Deirdre Amsden, but I sew them together rather than using the tiles for applique).
More fiddly-type hand sewing.
5/8" squares
This reminds me of a gum wrapper chain (remember those? I'm so old...).

fabrics:
denyse schmidt flea market fancy
vintage sheet
heather bailey freshcut

mini hex flower

mini hex flower

After seeing amy's teeny hexes (go look, they're adorable!
www.flickr.com/photos/amygunson/4672654995/ )
I dug out my experiment with mini hexes.
These are about 11mm on each side (the whole flower is about 2 inches across).

I don't know much about the fabrics. Little Red was in a Superbuzzy fairy tale charm pack and the floral was from a 30s repro scrap bag.
Ugh, this photo. I need to make a new lightbox...
