Guess What?

Guess What?

Elk Butt.

Lots of Elk brought traffic to a complete halt as they grazed their way across Highway 1 near Prarie Creek Redwoods State Park. If you look closely, Mr Elk is smiling.

Approaching Storm

Approaching Storm

After we left the Fern Canyon trailhead we both ran around on the beach, and found two university researchers taking data from a dead Sea Otter (not pictured). In the period of about 15 minutes it went from bright and sunny to totally raining on us and I snapped a few pictures of the transition. Fortunately, my fancy new camera is somewhat weather sealed so I wasn't too worried about the raindrops. But we both got soaked and frozen by the time we made it back to the all terrain vehicle (previous photo)

Offroading in the Fiesta

Offroading in the Fiesta

It may be a small economy hatchback, but this thing tackled the two "rivers" we had to "ford" (pun intended) to get to the trailhead.

Fern Canyon 2

Fern Canyon 2

Fern Canyon is located in Prarie Creek Redwoods State Park. Apparently it was used to shoot some scenes from "The Lost World," I can't imagine those guys hauling all that equipment into the forrest. It's about an 4 mile drive over a twisty dirt road to get to the trailhead, and the hike was really enjoyable.

Fern Canyon

Fern Canyon

Almost every photo came out like this, I was too busy gawking at the scenery to realize that the sky was getting utterly blown out with too much light. As a result, a lot of the tree cover doesn't really appear in the photo. Above the canyon is a redwood grove with some pretty big trees
