purple mushrooms

purple mushrooms by yewenyi.
I have never seen these before, Charl found them.

I have not changed the colour, this is what it really is, charl and chris (see the link below) also have photos. Though I might have increased the saturation a little (5 or 10%). I cannot remember.

These mushrooms are of unknown edibility. All the people who probably once knew are dead. But eating wild mushrooms just needs the appropriate knowledge about which ones to collect. When I was a kid living in West Sunshine, Melbourne, we had Yugoslav neighbours. The would go and collect wild mushrooms. I can tell you, the bug round yellow-orange ones they brought home where as well as the others were a million times better than the ones you get in the supermarkets. There are still many people of middle European origin that maintain this tradition of collecting wild mushrooms. It is tragic the misinformed people who try to destroy these traditions.

These are just amazing. You have fantastic specimens. I have been able to identify this one. It is a Basidiomycota (one of the 3 branches of fungi) and its exact species is Cortinarius archeri.

Caps are to 100 mm across, convex at first, becoming broardly convex to flattened or slightly upturned. They have this brown membranous ring. The bright purple caps gradually fade to purplish brown and finally brown. Widespread and fairly common in eucalypt forests. Fabulous Fungi - Australia (Pool)

The membranous ring looks brown in the photo, but it was actually brilliant yellow. See the second page of my photos. Does that mean they're a different species?

No one knows much about which Australian mushrooms can be eaten. The people who probably knew, the aboriginies, were wiped out of this part of the country a long time ago.
