leopard moth
So gorgeous it's otherworldly. Last year we found leopard moth caterpillars, which are black and fuzzy with bright red skin visible under the black fuzz. Hypercombe scribonaria, found in MI in late June. Black and white, 2 inches.

Fantastic photo! Thanks for adding to the Field Guide group, & for the good description.

Thanks for the tags! Is it Hypercompe instead of Ecpantheria? If so, I'll delete the Ecpantheria and change the description.
Anita363 (84 months ago | reply)
Yes, it's now placed in genus Hypercompe. Here's a reasonably well curated checklist that we're using as our taxonomic authority: www.lepbarcoding.org/cl_nth_am.php.

Thank you! I live in MI and have a picture of this same moth from my backyard and have been searching for over a year (maybe 2- I'd have to go pull the photo) to try and find what kind it was! It was the most beautiful thing we had ever seen! I finally found your picture and know the name now! Thanks!
