Iceberg Lake Sunset
Wow, it's been a while since I posted anything! This image is from a recent trip to Glacier National Park in Montana. I was fortunate to be able to join Ryan Dyar, Candace Bartlett, and Michael Bollino on the hike up to Iceberg Lake. It was such a fun hike! Coming home in the dark in bear country is always an interesting experience. Fortunately we didn't have any bear encounters. When we crested the final rise and looked down on the lake Michael and I just gasped! It was our first time to this unique place. It felt like stepping into Alaska...except with maybe more flowers. If you ever get up to Glacier you HAVE to do this hike!!
It was a fun evening in Montana with good company and good light. What more can you ask for? God was good to us and I'm truly thankful.

So much depth with crazy color! The contrast of those colorful flowers to the cold ice is sweet.

That night had some great light indeed, I was over in Logan for that one.. I'm sad I didn't do Iceberg my first time out to Glacier, but next time. I think I see Bollino's corn lily over there on the right!
Now where's this shot of Grinnell I've heard so much about? Ryan, Candace, my buddy David, and myself almost got mauled looking for the bear grass up there, haha..
Anyway, good work here, man. Perfectly handled mountain face and lake. I appreciate the subtlety of the sky color, and the FG colors are rockin'. Maybe a bit of light haloing above the left side of the mountain/sky line, and a bit of dark haloing around the aster? Other than that, perfect.

Well Mike, I put my hands in it and they were throbbing pretty quick!
Thanks for the feedback Alex. I actually worked on the haloing a little but you're right, it needs some more attention.
There's a butt load of bear grass up to the right of Grinnell Lake....but I wanna hear about this bear!!!

If you look closely you can see Ryan's head in the flowers! I left him in cause I figure that will make the image worth BILLIONS some day!

This is awesome, Rob! That hike was definitely a highlight of the summer! I like how large the lake is in the frame. In mine it's less prominent which I'm bummed about. I'm also super happy we didn't run into any bears on the way out! It was cool meeting you and I hope we get a chance to shoot again someday. Cheers!

No prob, Rob.
So, the bear. Ryan, Candace, and myself were chillin' in an alcove on the way up (right about where you can start seeing the lake where the trail turns right), snacking and chatting for about an hour, waiting for light. My buddy Dave didn't feel like sitting and was standing out on the trail. All of a sudden he says "bear" and we all quickly grab our shit and head down the trail (except Ryan left his tripod behind, haha - our main motivation for going back up afterward). Ryan and I were the only ones with bear spray, so we stayed in front of the other two, spray at the ready, as the bear continued down the trail toward us. Ryan was yelling at it: "GET OUTTA HERE! GET OUTTA HERE, BEAR! HEY! GET OUTTA HERE!". It felt like the bear was stalking us, because it kept getting closer in the brush above us as we backed down. We all chimed in with the yelling and continued back up the trail, and the bear finally increased its distance and continued down. Props to RyDy for totally keeping his cool in this sitch.
The bear didn't seem aggressive in retrospect, just wanted to get down the trail to the lakeside berries, we figured. Anyway, if Dave had also been sitting in the alcove with us, the bear would have come out 4 feet above our heads atop the alcove ledge, or 3 feet in front of our faces around the corner on the trail. At the closest, we were probably 10 feet away.
Zero sky action/light that night, and zero bear grass meadows found. One possible twilight image and one bear story gained.

Thanks Jilly pop!
Alex....that's a good bear story! Kinda glad I wasn't there! I had a bear walk out of the bushes in front of me earlier in the week. I was shooting the sunrise alone up on the hillside in the Many Glacier area. On my way back down he popped out of the bushes in front of me. I stopped. He was munching berries...so I slowly backed up and made a BIG circle around Mr. Bear and everything was cool. Definitely noticed an uptick in the old heart rate!! I saw 21 bears total in 5 days...all from the road except for the above mentioned kritter. Last year I saw zero bears.

I can't believe you guys didn't see the HUGE field of bear grass!!!! You must not have gone far enough up the trail. It was bear grass heaven!
Alex Noriega. (9 months ago | reply)
Wow, 21 and you were by yourself for a lot of them? Crazy, man. The one with RyDy was the only one I've ever seen outside of a controlled setting.. I was in Glacier for 6 days. Not a lot of backcountry hikes this time, though - stuck mostly to Logan, St Mary, and Hidden.
We saw tons of empty BG stalks, we figured either your meadow died out already (it was about 3-4 days after you shot it), or that we didn't get up high enough. It seemed like we had gone too far already, but apparently not far enough!
