Back garden nature - Oriental Pied Hornbill

    Newer Older

    T189 Photo-A-Week 2012, Weekly Alphabet Challenge, week 27 "N is for Nature"

One of the hornbills which frequent our neighbourhood was so kind to stop by our garden and pose in full view this morning, sitting on a low branch of our jambu ayer tree, our garden is just a little strip of land but apparently a magnet for all kinds of wildlife. These birds were thought to be extinct in Singapore but there seem to be more of them every year. There were 3 in our garden this morning. They are usually difficult to snap as they are shy and prefer the higher branches of trees.
The palms in the background are Lipstick or Red Sealing Wax Palms (Cyrtostachys lakka) in the neighbours' garden.

The bird is lovely, but the setting and background focus just lift it that bit beyond. I have crows, you have hornbills :0))

How amazing to see such a beautiful bird in your own garden. You have framed it perfectly with the branch and foliage too.

I agree with Lorna and Helen - makes our garden birds look a bit dull!!

I'd much rather have a sparrow in my garden (if I had one).

Great shot and I'm not in the slightest bit jealous. ;)

Thank you very much ! I have to remind myself sometimes just how lucky I am to have this on my doorstep (including pesky monkeys who have stolen all the apples from my fruitbowl this week !) I'm only capturing if and when I can, they're the special visitors !

Thanks Joanie, it's the fruit trees that do it really ! :-)
