517 E Boylston, Seattle, 1909 and 2012

517 E Boylston, Seattle, 1909 and 2012

I used this in What Became of the Almost Tallest Building on E Pike.

The newspaper in the background is the May 30, 1909 Seattle Times, Page 32. As I describe in my blog post, the apartment building foundation was built but then suddenly the realty company decided to build an auto show room instead.

Looking Back

Looking Back

The first floor of 517 East Pike is being remodeled for Kaladi Brothers Coffee. The windows in the back date from the 1910 construction of the building. The windows look out on dirt -- ground level behind the building is at the second floor. Curious!

This photo didn't make the cut for my article today in Capitol Hill Blog, What became of the almost tallest building on E Pike 2/12/2012.

The Jog in Pike Street

The Jog in Pike Street

Seattle's Pike Street bends from Bellevue to Melrose, adjusting between street grids.

In the foreground are former auto shops, now Victrola Coffee and a neighborhood market. Across Bellevue is First Covenant Church. It was made a city landmark but the church fought it and won the battle a decade later -- so did they make the building for us to want to love it or not?

Kanagawa, late 1950s?

Kanagawa, late 1950s?

For your research enjoyment.

@Sherlock77 and @vlkemans have identified this as a late-1950s Isuzu Minx. I tried to identify this Japanese car but failed. 1950s. License plate for Kanagawa Prefecture and Yokosuka naval base and another tag. Perhaps Tama River in the distance? Perhaps in Yokosuka?

This could be from Negishi naval housing in Yokohama?

Found at an antique store.

12th and Madison, Seattle, 1920 and 2011

12th and Madison, Seattle, 1920 and 2011

Wrote about this on Capitol Hill Seattle Blog in The tunnel from Capitol Hill to downtown that never happened on 1/29/2012.

The original photo at the Seattle Municipal Archives is huge and detailed and awesome. Check out this link -- if the image there is distorted, try again later this week. There was an upload issue. #12839.
