  • I heard the Nuclear bird fluttering in one of the delapidated hotel rooms in the abandoned hotel in Pripryat, 3km from Chernobyl Reactor 4. When I entered the room it stayed very very still. I wish I could have helped it.

Nuclear Bird

Chernobyl

This bird is still alive but dying. It has become trapped between some double glazing and there is blood on the windows. I did not want to touch it because it was contaminated with radiation. Watching this bird struggle was unpleasant but symbolic, I felt, of man tampering with nature; Chernobyl.

Haunting image - can't find the words to describe the emotions it evokes.

This photo stayed a long time in my mind. I thought they had to smash the window ..... You might nothing touch because of the contamination, I understand. But I was thinking if no one, or the guide, couldn't break the window by a kick of his foot (shoe) for example. I think the guide could also bring something, for example an iron bar or a simple stone, to smash the window I think.

Now, it seems to me as the dying bird is a dramatic touristic attraction. I disapprove this situation totally. I am disgusted of it.

Only with my eyes when I was there; I was shooting black and white film unfortunately :(

It would have been a killer image in colour.

Wow.. I can feel the anxiety, that must've been an awkward moment. Chernobyl offers quite a scene for photographers. Great photos! I also liked a lot the photo of the old newspaper.

Wow. Very sad, and allegoric as you mentioned.
