Patrice (3rd from the left) and some of her Canine Companions for Independence friends attended Dragon Paradise Cafe today at a local elementary school. The dog all the way to the right is what us puppy raisers aspire to, having the dog that we raised graduate. Reisig is a Facility Dog and was placed with a teacher at the school to work with students in her Special Ed class.

Once a year, the students in Reisig's class open their cafe for lunch for 3 days as a fundraiser for their class. They plan this event for months, everything from deciding on a theme, coming up with a menu, and each student must actually interview for a job (such as host, waiter, cashier, cook), wear the appropriate uniform, and they practice their roles for the big day for several days leading up to the event. They raise money for their big annual field trip and donate a portion of their profit from the event to CCI. These kids are getting some real life lessons learning responsibility, how to run a business, etc. They always do a great job!

It also provides a good socialization opportunity for the dogs to remain calm amongst all the other dogs, kids, and people in the restaurant.

If the dogs had thumbs, they'd give the Dragon Paradise Cafe a big "thumbs up". :-)
