This was taken the same night as this shot, when the sky was truly going crazy. It was just an incredible sight, in a great location. These reef shelves only get revealed like this at low tide in the winter, when a lot of the sand gets pulled out to sea and the water level is low. Low tides like this only happen a few times a year at sunset, and to get the sky to go off like this when all of these things align is even more rare, so this was definitely a treat to see.

This one is underexposed a bit to bring out even more of the colors, but the details are still there in the shadows.

I caught this gorgeous scene just as a little storm was finishing up. This El Nino has produced some spectacular and unusual weather for us down here in Southern California, and it has been wonderful to get out and see the sky do its thing so often.

On a week long trip up the coast, this was the only sunset that materialized. If it was only going to happen in one place, I'm glad it was here. This spot is an old favorite of mine. It's the spot I first took a decent landscape photo, and the spot where I really fell in love with the outdoors.

Big, on Black

I shot this a few months ago on an afternoon that couldn't decide if it wanted to be stormy or not. The entire coast was under pretty heavy cloud cover the entire day, and sunset was no exception. It wasn't until just after the sun had set that a little break in the clouds appeared and the sky lit up momentarily. The glow didn't last for long, but it was much appreciated after waiting around in the wind for the better part of the afternoon.

My first sunset of 2010 was particularly spectacular. So spectacular, that surfers got out of the water and just watched it. I stayed around until well after sunset, and nearly every person that walked by asked "Did you get that?!" or remarked "What a show, huh?". It was an incredible sky that kept building and building.

I decided to keep this guy in the frame because, one, I thought it added something to the shot, two, it gave it some scale, and three, it didn't hurt the title either.
