I didn't put two & two together until I was checking up on a hike we just completed. Location for this photo is Mono Lake in California, just East of Yosemite National Park.
Next time I go, I'll remember to pack my blue speedos .. though might get a bloody nose trying to reinact this, since the water's pretty shallow here!

The sad truth is that the water may have receded quite a way, the lake is being depleted much faster than it can recover. This is currently owned by the Los Angeles water district and public access to the park areas were scheduled to be closed indefinitely. California budget cuts being used as the excuse to limit access.
