against the wall

with this photo I hoped to capture two of the things I most liked about visiting Cuba. The first is the richly textured & coloured walls. throw just about anything in front of one and you've got something worth shooting. The other subject i enjoyed photographing in Cuba was, of course, the people. This was maybe my most personal trip, since i travelled there alone, and I got to meet and talk with many people while there. Consequently, I photographed the people much more than I normally do when I travel.

taken with a Pentax P30 SLR

*wow! an intersting statistic; apparently this is ranked as the most intersting photo on flickr with the tag "Cuba". (even more interesting is that I seem to have the top 4 photos with that tag.) hard to believe.

remember those long flat sticks of candy from when we were kids? Looks just like this wall! Without the um, dirt & rubble, etc.

Nice wall. The colors of Cuba are almost to much for someone from the low and grey countries;0)

    yeah, great wall.

it always surprises/scares me how nearly all cuba pics could be taken in northeastern brazil.

Love the way the colour line looks like its gong to bisect the guys head

haha, i was just browsing through your photographs and wondering why you didn't put this up on delete. well, now that you have...

i mean. what's there not to like? the man and the wall are almost one, and it resonates very well for me.

makes me want to go to cuba, but unfortunately the closest thing i have to that are them expensive cigars... :)

This is good. Very good. The colors, the textures, the man, and the environment as a whole. Well done!

Looks like a straight razor in his hand. OK photo, but the exposure is a bit off, with that blown area at his feet. It's a shame that his face has that band of sun on it, too, makes it look as though he has leprosy.

I like the off-kilter composition in this, works well with the subject and the mood. But although it's probably the best I've seen this evening, it hasn't quite got that quality that screams "safe!"

    @ supersnail,
    looks like saveme8, me thinks

  24. kimberkit (80 months ago | reply)

The composition, wall texture, and color kick ass :) And it seems clear that this will go into the safe. But for the record, the uneven lighting on face and the flashlight toe keep it from being perfect for me.

change the title to the flashlight toe comment or I'll rescind my save! Very creative, and nice technique to work with the burnout.

I love the "flashlight toe" and the fact that the man seems to be looking down at it with such interest. But I agree with your own assessment: I wish you'd zoomed to just that. And I don't know if you enhanced the colors, but they're just a shade surreal. With a crop and a little less pink, you'd have it. But the other photo, while I love the idea and the strong impact, is hurt by a boring composition and washed-out sky. I have to withhold my vote for now... :-/

Mark, both photos are great. I've feel the risk in both places, the street and the cemetery. This time, your photo wins. He has something in his right hand.

Great photo, I love the subject looking away. But I guess I will vote for the other one which is simply a unique shadow-play.

The other photo seems flat to me. Your colors pop and add depth. I like the light you caught on his face. The flashlight toe comment I could do without.

Gotta go with the one of a kind cemetery stones. This is a great photo but really two subjects, the wall and the person.
