last emperor P'u Yi & family

    the last emperor

Photographer unknown at this time, but I'm searching online to find out. This is a photo of a portrait I found in the Palace Museum of the forbidden City, Beijing. I really liked this portrait and decided to mess around with it to give it a twist of my own.
    here's the altered version.

      What a great portrait !
Faces and attitude are so strange here... and your work on it is the continuation !
Although it's different, it reminds me Freaks, the famous film of Tod Browning, especially the girl on the right, who doesn't seem normal.

ha! the girl on the right is actually his wife. I never heard of that film, but now I'm curious.
l8sunrise, I love these kinds of old portraits too. There's a quaility about them (or maybe it's actually a lack of a certain qulity) that you just don't see anymore. If you can find more portraits of P'u Yi, the last emperor (see link above), I think he has some really interesting images taken of him.

actually pu yi's wife is chinese and was called Wan Rong. people in these old photos always looked a bit freaky, whether western or eastern! :) have you seen any pictures of the crimean war? everyone looked so strange with their overly bushy beards and eccentric clothing which weren't very photogenic! here's a better picture of wan rong (Elizabeth) and Pu yi (Henry)

hm, that makes more sense to me, but then the records at the Imperial Palace museum have made a huge error in claiming she was Japanese! oh well. Thanks for that link by the way. some good stuff there.

blimy that is a big booboo! :D they could have meant the wife of pu yi's brother, who was indeed japanese. in fact i think he is wearing his cadet uniform there from when he studied in japan. the japanese matched him with a japanese girl in order to exert more control over the imperial house- setting them up for the puppet regime in manchukuo during the war.

aaaahhh, thanks again. I think it may have been me who made the mistake when reading the info then. I forget now, but that's probably what they said, that it was his brother's wife. I do remember reading the reason for it, just as you described. thanks for that correction.

      :O)
