Jesselton Recreation Club

Jesselton Recreation Club

I looked at a modern map of Kota Kinabalu (as Jesselton is now called), looking for the junction of South Road and Atkinson Road, but all the road names are now in Malay.

You don't need a camera to be a photographer, just a seeing eye.

Strangely I can't remember his name, but I do remember he had an Asahi Pentax Spotmatic.

Jamestown, St Helena

Jamestown, St Helena

Jamestown is the capital of St Helena, a small island in mid atlantic.

Photo taken in 1971, and scanned from a rather overexposed colour slide.

Fuel Depot Kuching

Fuel Depot Kuching

A photo taken at the same time as the one of HMS Wilkieson. This time my chief took a photo of me with the oil depot behind me.

Both these negatives were badly scratched so I have spent a bit of time cleaning up the photos. Still a bit speckly but much better than as scanned.

HMS Wilkieston

HMS Wilkieston

In the 1960's there was an attempt by Indonesia to take over the whole of the island of Borneo. During the defence of East Malaysia, minesweepers were of great value, as with only six foot draft they could get far up the many rivers. For some of the time in this "Confrontation" as it was called, I was in Naval Party Kilo based in Kuching, the capital of Sarawak. Me and my chief used to meet the minesweepers either at the Jetty in the town or at the fuel depot a few miles downstream, and sort out any problems they might have with their radios and radar. This often saved them a long journey back to Singapore.

This photo shows HMS Wilkieson refuelling at the fuel depot. The lorry up close to the ship is a drinking water tanker, filling the ship's tank. Minesweepers carried no desalination plant, and getting clean drinking water in the jungle could be a problem.

My chief (a great guy!) is at the left of the photo, and the landrover is the one we used to get around.
