The proposed streetscape works to the space between Lothian Road and the Usher Hall will improve the setting of the hall by removing a large degree of the existing clutter and replacing this with minimal street furniture and a consistent surface material. The surface will be natural materials such as stone setts, granite and Caithness paving. The proposed streetscape works will enhance the visual
setting of the hall and the surrounding public realm.

That "clutter", as I remember it, included a couple of attractive trees that provided some shade and colour. There were a few benches, for a wee rest on the way up the hill or to enjoy the former view of the Usher Hall (before they stuck that grey glass thing on it). Then there was the Bell Tower clock, now stuck across the road in Festival Square and set back from the pavement so that it isn't visible until you are at the square.
But they added in some pissoirs grey metal things for holding posters, in a stern row along the front of the Hall.
