DDR Chocolate wrapper Thüringer Schokoladenwerke - Thürina - 1990

Made in the GDR in 1990 in collaboration with Ritter Sport. Notice the word Chocolade. Chocolate has been made in Saalfeld since 1901 when the industry was founded by the brothers Mauxion. Now the firm -Schokoladewerk Saalfeld GmbH - is controlled by Stollwerck AG of Koeln. Briefly after 1948, the firm was known as VEB Mauxion Schocholadefabrik, later VEB Rotstern in 1954. In 1966, it became the VEB Thueringer Scholadewerke. In 1990 it became a GmbH owned by the Treuhand, but co-operation with Ritter Sport was not successful leaving only 320 employees out of 1600 at the peak, having been originally responsible for making 95 per cent of all DDR's wrapped chocolate. Stollwerck AG took over running of the factory from the Treuhand, and the business has been growing again. Since 2002, the Swiss firm Barry Callebaut AG has taken over Stollwerck

Wow. I'm used to see vintage graphic designs from DDR, even from 1989. But this one amazes me. All the information on the wrap almost match the European standards. I did not know Ritter Sport was eastern made.

Thanks for making me do some more research, Selim. Look under the reference I have added. The collaboration was not successful. Chocolate wrappers like this were only made for a very short time. In 1990 and 1991 especially, it was very difficult to find DDR area made anything....shops were flooded with west german made products, which of course produced a boom there and a collapse in the east.

Hi, I'm an admin for a group called Saalfeld, and we'd love to have this added to the group!
