A large Retrospective of Carey Clarke is on view at the Royal Hibernian Academy, Dublin
The exhibition takes two large floors of what it remains still one the best galleries in town.
Carey Clarke's work is well established within the tradition of the Irish Academy and clearly strictly related to the RHA tradition for both style and subject matters.
His best works are and the portraits of the late sixties, the warmth colors there are just right, and some of his very latest landscapes (2006/7), bright and, apparently, so simple.
Carey Clarke’s technique is out of discussion, but is that subtle presence of a light, clear, sense of humour that makes his portraits much more interesting than most of of those from his contemporary colleagues at the Academy.
A very nice exhibition, though probably too many works for a gallery that offers its best when the whites of its walls is left freer to dominate the space.
