Alabama Hills

Alabama Hills

Alabama Hills is a few miles west of US395 in Lone Pine, CA along Whitney Portal Rd. This place has been used as a setting for various John Wayne movies in the past and most recently for the Kite Runner because of its similarity to Afghanistan's terrain.

Photo was taken with a Hasselblad 500 C/M with a Carl Zeiss 80 mm Planar f2.8 lens. Film used was Kodak Tri-X. I scanned the negative using a CanoScan 8400F flatbed scanner and post processed using Photoshop Lightroom 3 and CS5.

Death Valley

Death Valley

Here's another one of those photos I took when I was just starting out with DSLR's. It was kinda hazy, low contrast, and uninteresting. So what I did was revisit the RAW file on Lightroom 3 and did three things, set the color balance to daylight, did auto tone correction, and picked strong contrast in the tone curve selection.

So after doing that, this photo now goes back to the "work in progress" folder. It might involve another visit to Death Valley to do a reality check on the actual colors and tones of this place which I believe is close to the Harmony Borax Works.

Point Lobos

Point Lobos

Another photo taken when I was starting out with first DSLR several years ago. I was able to liven it up using the adjustment brush on Lightroom 3. Specifically, I adjusted lighting on the foreground rocks and the foam to have more distinct layer separation and for their textures come out. Just nothing but old fashioned darkroom grunt work done with a computer. My advice is don't delete old pictures even if they look so so the first time because technology and post processing skills will eventually catch up with them someday. Point Lobos, CA
