Lunch Break

I've been freezing my buns off in the studio today. When I took a lunch break, I was in the mood for hearty, core warming sustenance. So, tomato soup and crusty cheesy bread it was!

Over the weekend, we practically LIVED on antelope stew. It was so delicious, tender and tatery. Every time I took a bite, I felt so thankful for the beast that was my food. Which reminds me, I already tweeted this, but a few days ago I put in for a cow elk tag in the Island Lake unit of Idaho (greater West Yellowstone area). I hope I am drawn, I have a 50/50 chance of getting that tag. If I do get drawn, it's going to be SUCH hard work. Can you imagine me, little me, packing portions of a field dressed elk ten miles down a razor back ridge while eluding grizzlies (this area is known for griz attacks during elk season)??? Rob will help me, though it still seems like quite the task...but I have to do it because I'm an omnivore and I have to know that I am capable of getting my own meat -- I don't want to always have to rely on Rob's harvests.

Foggy! You should join me tomorrow:)

Fox, you practice subsistence up there, you know exactly what I mean. There's nothing more organic than game and there's nothing more honorable than gathering it yourself. :)

That's why I don't eat meat - because I don't kill it myself. When I move out west (eventually), I probably will start.

Was it gluten free bread (do I remember correctly that you eat gluten free?)? I can't find a good recipe/source for gf bread. Bah.

Brooke: It isn't GF, it's REAL bread!!! I was GF for a while, but then my thyroid was put under intense management and now I can handle all glutens again:) I hope you come West. Real soon.

Brandi: I wish for you to come visit too. That would be a delight. x

i left my comment before you'd filled in the details. i fully agree with you about knowing where your meat comes from, and it's often why i think of learning to hunt myself. if you get that tag i wish you the best of luck, and know you have the determination to do it!

I just watched the movie "Hanna" It's a story about a young girl being raised and trained by her father, an ex-cia agent, the opening scene this little girl is hiding and dodging around in a snow covered forest.... she is following an elk, massive elk, eventually she shoots the beast,( with a bow and arrow) and after a bit of a run, catches up with him.... she just misses his heart, at this point she says, " I just missed you heart" and then she pulls out a gun and shoots him in the head! And that is part of the story line. Then she proceeds to gut and clean the guy, in-between fending off a sneak attack from her father, I know it was a crazy opening scene,( It's kind of a crazy movie!) any way then she hauls the beast home to their little hut in the forest! All that meat, in the snow! Kind of reminds me of you!!!! Except for the part about the attack training!!
      Just saying.....
