African Elephant herd at water hole, Kruger National Park

This African elephant (Loxodonta africana) herd was pictured drinking water in the Kruger National Park, South Africa. Taken at the Nyawutsi Hide.

A strange incident ensued. The elephant standing apart from the group came up to the water to drink. Another elephant trumpeted loudly and angrily, chasing off the thirsty elephant. Even after the herd had left, the "bully" elephant was doing its best to stop the thirsty elephant from drinking.

Someone has suggested that this may be a case of the herd wanting to push out a male elephant which has become too mature to stay with the females.
