Adoniram Judson was the great missionary to Burma and the first American to become a "foreign missionary." He holds a ship which signifies: first, the missionary endeavor of the church, and second, the vessel on which his views on baptism underwent the change which led to his being immersed by Dr. William Carey on September 6, 1812 in the Baptist chapel in Calcutta. The figures to his right dramatize his imprisonment in Burma. Hanging by his feet was one of the many trials he endured.
