The great Norman Castle at Conisborough in South Yorkshire.
The manor of Conisborough had belonged to King Harold, the last Saxon king but after the conquest, King William gave the land to William de Warrene who built the first earth and timber castle here. Later the castle was acquired by Hamelin Plantagenet, who was King Henry II’s half brother. He built the great cylindrical keep and curtain wall soon after 1180.
The castle was made famous in the 19th century by Sir Walter Scott in his novel, Ivanhoe.
