Wherwell's pretty cottages are some of the most photographed in
Hampshire.
Queen Elfrida, mother of King Ethelred, founded an abbey in Wherwell
in 986 in penitence for mudering King Edward the Martyr. She was
connected with several other murders including that of her husband by
King Edgar in nearby Harewood Forest. A monument stands on the spot.
She died by falling in the River Test at Wherwell.
The wives of King Canute and King Edward the Confessor both took
refuge at the abbey.
