Sullivan began his running career with the St. Bartholomew Club in Manhattan, then moved to the 22nd Regiment track team. When its coach, Ernie Hjertberg -- who had run the mile in 4:31 -- moved to the Irish American Athletic Club, Sullivan followed him in 1905.
