A great blue heron pays me a visit.

A great blue heron pays me a visit.

I have found that if you sit still, all kinds of interesting things can happen. I was standing still on a bridge in the Audubon Swamp Garden when a great blue heron landed in the path near the bridge and began walking toward me. He eventually got within 5 feet, began checking out the edge of the swamp, then walked away. (Audubon Swamp Garden 2-28-12)

Love in the swamp

Love in the swamp

Two weeks or so ago, I spotted a red-bellied woodpecker that was carving a little nest out in a tree. (Actually I didn't really spot it...I only became aware of it when the woodpecker spit a big chunck of woodchips into my hair). I went back to the swamp yesterday to check on the nest and spotted this. Based on the glint in the eye, I would say that love is in the air......(Audubon Swamp Garden 2-28-12)

Immature night heron

Immature night heron

Did a photography workshop with Eric Horan at the Bear Island WMA on Bennetts Point Road on 2-26-12. I have never seen as many night herons in one spot as I have in that location. Got a close up of an immature night heron flying by.

Not so little blue.....

Not so little blue.....

There has been on lone blue heron running around the Audubon Swamp Garden for the past 10 days or so. Usually he steers clear of where I am, but today I managed to wait him out and he eventually came closer, allowing me to focus on his piercing eyes....(2-25-12)

Headed home

Headed home

This is the time of the year that the birds show up at the rookery in the Audubon Swamp Garden and begin making nests and having babies. The first ones in are the great blue herons. There are about a dozen nests up and running. Early in the morning and late in the afternoon, the herons put on a show - picking up nesting material and flying around with it until they can safely land back in their respective trees. Some herons, like this one, manage to drag half the swamp back to the nest with them. (Audubon Swamp Garden 2-20-12)
