Messerschmitt BF-109 Emil

Messerschmitt BF-109 Emil

Flying Heritage Collection BF-109 makes a low pass over Paine Field in Everett, WA.

This airplane is part of the Flying Heritage Collection, and a history of the airplane appears on their website www.flyingheritage.com, repeated below:

This Bf 109-E was manufactured in Germany and deployed in October 1939. Piloted by Eduard Hemmerling, it flew primarily over France. Hemmerling shot down a British Spitfire on July 7, 1940, while escorting Stuka dive-bombers that were attacking British ships in Dover harbor. Later that month he destroyed a British Blenheim bomber and another British plane. But his own aircraft was mortally wounded, and Hemmerling turned back toward France. His failing airplane crashed off the coast of Cap Blanc Nez, killing the 27-year-old pilot. In 1988, a man walking on the beach near Calais noticed a piece of metal sticking out of the sand—the tip of this plane's wing.

P-51B Impatient Virgin

P-51B Impatient Virgin

P-51B Impatient Virgin starting engine.

This airplane is owned by John Sessions and is based in Everett, Washington. It was featured in an article in Air Classics magazine. From that article:

"This particular aircraft, s/n 42-1006638, was delivered to Britain in early 1944 and found a home with the 376th Fighter Squadron, 361 st Fighter Group, based at Bottisham. The Mustang was flown by several pilots and accumulated over 700 hr flight time. By mid-1945, the Mustang was being used for training flights and on 22 June it was taken up by F/O Wade Ross. While engaged in low-level flying, Ross experienced problems with the Merlin. He managed to get the airplane up to 1000-ft and then bailed out. The fighter plunged into a beet field near Hilgay, Norfolk, and, after an investigation, was basically forgotten. Only one person, farmhand John Hales, witnessed the crash.
In 2002 a group was excavating for an aircraft in the same filed that the P-51B crashed in. They were unsuccessful in their search, but John Hales, who still lived in the area, told them of another crash nearby and the group began the successful excavation of the remains of Impatient Virgin. The remains of the aircraft were transferred to Pacific Fighters in 2006 for the start of a restoration that would consume thousands of hours."
