Empty Enclosure - Underwater Viewing

Empty Enclosure - Underwater Viewing

While taking images for my Empty Enclosure project I started a video project that was also shown in the Culture Control exhibition. It started when I noticed this gorgeous light that came through the water of the penguin enclosure and I soon realised that the way people passed through this space and also how they reacted to the animals and each other made interesting viewing.

It was filmed on the 5d Mark2 at 1920x1080res and then output onto Bluray and shown on a 50" plasma screen for the exhibition.

The small res version is on vimeo: www.vimeo.com/bevymay/emptyenclosure

I may do a couple of shorter versions for Flickr and Youtube (after my laptop feels like it has recovered from all the rendering it did last time!).

The first in the series of my final 'Empty Enclosure' prints for our exhibition 'Culture Control' - for more info go and have a look at our exhibition website: www.photopowerrangers.com

Here is the brief summary of the project:

Empty Enclosure.

In the zoo there are almost invisible barriers created between us and animal. Cages are a thing of the past; modern zoos rely on thick glass or distance, adding a little water to separate one creature from another. While the physical and metaphorical distance between ourselves and animal becomes greater, a dominance is enforced over nature to create an environment strictly under human control and made almost entirely for our viewing pleasure.

The images are deliberately difficult to read at first glance, inviting the viewer to peer in and decipher exactly what has been captured and placed behind the glass. The accompanying video studies the reactions of people as they look into an enclosure.

...and this is the only description I'm giving for each image - I'm not telling you what any of the photographs are of or how they were taken, you have to guess!

In at number 4 on the 'Empty Enclosure' countdown is today's image.

I discovered on my second visit to the zoo that I'd spent so long taking pictures of the penguins and the seals that I hadn't actually made it round the whole zoo (including the area where I shot this), but then that's good because it meant there was more to see each time I went. Actually it wasn't until the third visit I saw the lemurs (which I'll post images of much later) and I'm still not convinced I actually saw the whole place!
