Saturday "The Power of Music" Exploration |
On Saturday, February 21st, 33 Youth
Fellows from the Coro Exploring
Leadership Program teamed up with
Oakland based non-profit, Youth Movement
Records, to explore the "Power of
Music".
The high school juniors spent the day at the newly refurbished Fox Theater in downtown Oakland. In preparation for the day, they were asked to write song lyrics expressing their ideas, opinions and passion for change to President Obama. In the morning, they shared their song lyrics and worked together to pull out common themes for verses, a hook and a chorus. They also discussed the role that music plays in their own lives and the power it has, both positive and negative, in our society.
YMR Program Director, Ryan Peters facilitated an engaging discussion about the messages in hip-hop music such as hyper-masculinity and misogyny using scenes from the documentary "Hip-Hop: Beyond Beats & Rhymes".
After lunch, the Youth Fellows worked with YMR staff to learn how music is produced. They got in the recording studio, learned about ProTools recording software and recorded their rap, spoken work or song lyrics over an YMR produced beat. Other Youth Fellows worked together to design a CD cover. Meanwhile, YMR Beats Instructor taught another group of Youth Fellows how to make beats and mix records.
It was an incredibly engaging and empowering day that allowed many of the Youth Fellows to showcase their hidden musical talents, while others stepped out of their comfort zone to rap or sing for the very first time.
Together with YMR, the Youth Fellows produced the first ever Coro Exploring Leadership Program song track entitled "Real Change: A Message to Obama", which we hope will hit the national airwaves and be available in stores soon!
The Youth Fellows will also be taking action by spreading the word about the services that YMR provides. They will be recruiting at least two people they know to attend future YMR workshops or events and get involved with the amazing non-profit organization.
