Michigan House Speaker Jase Bolger spoke with the Michigan Municipal League Board on Friday, Jan. 21, 2011 at the board's regular meeting. Also speaking with the group were Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder and Bill Rustem, chief strategist for Governor Snyder. All three talked about the financial challenges facing the state and the desire in Lansing to work the the League and other organizations to help lift the state out of its budget crisis. Governor Rick Snyder, in particular, said he understands there cannot be economic development unless Michigan has great communities. He said quality of life and place are intertwined with Michigan's economic recovery. Snyder told League President Carol Shafto, Alpena Mayor, and other MML board members that he intends to introduce a broad package of reforms that will help communities deal with the financial crisis facing their municipalities and the state.
