Exploring the “edge condition” between legibility and abstraction, Reconstruction #5 employs pulsing lights to represent a street scene. The imagery straddles the divide between pure abstraction and pure digital information “noise.” The thickness of the screen (technically known as a reconstruction filter) in front of the light emitting diodes (LEDs), recalls “coke bottle” eyeglasses, suggesting the frailty of vision as well as questioning the legibility of the image. The glowing red color refers to traditional red LEDs, such as those used in stop lights, while conjuring associations of dream-like memories.
