Holbrook Canyon

Holbrook Canyon

It rained all mornning yesterday and I was going crazy. Finally, at about three PM it started snowing.

"I'm outta here," I told my wife. She could tell I was going stir crazy not being in one of the canyons. I get grumpy when I am trapped at home on a Saturday.

"Got your phone with you?" she asked like she does every time. "Yes," I grumbled as I closed the garage door and jumped in my truck.

By then about 4-5 inches had fallen and the roads had not been plowed. I headed up to 1300 East in Bountiful but it was snow packed and several cars were already slid off to the side of the road. I thought perhaps 4th North would have been plowed but it hadn't. So I u-turned and headed South to 300 South but it hadn't been plowed and even SUV's were getting stuck.

My truck is 2-wheeled drive (rear wheels at that) so I knew I couldn't make it up if the SUV's and 4-wheel drive big trucks couldn't make it up.

I crossed 3rd South and headed to Lakeview Drive. One plow had gone up the hill and left a trail of salt. No one was ahead of me so I could go at my own pace so off I went. Several cars were off the side of the road--one slammed into a tree in someone's front yard.

Long story short, I made it up to the top and spent a couple hours hiking up Holbrook Canyon. Came home in a completely different mood. There's something about trails, solitude, and places away from urbaninity that makes me just feel better all over.

My Foot and the Cat's Print

My Foot and the Cat's Print

There has been so little snow this year that I have been able to hike up trails that are usually too full of snow to travel on. Last Saturday I went up to the spring on the Trail to the Burro Mine. A large mountain lion used the same trail before me.

Mantua--Pronounced in Utah: "Manoway"

Mantua--Pronounced in Utah: "Manoway"

Mantua ( /ˈmænəweɪ/) is a town in eastern Box Elder County, Utah, United States. The population was 687 at the 2010 census. Mantua was settled in the mid-19th Century when future LDS President and then apostle and head church authority in Box Elder County Lorenzo Snow sent settlers to the valley to grow flax. The first group arrived in Mantua in 1863. They were all from Denmark and their local leader was Hans Jens Jensen. Snow was from Mantua, Ohio, and the town was named after the Ohio community in his honor.[3] Wikipedia
