GLaDOS head breakdown

GLaDOS head breakdown

People have been asking for a breakdown of GLaDOS since I first posted her. While I'm not prepared to disassemble her yet, I had to replace the LED wire recently so I took the opportunity to take this shot. I've removed the 1x2 plates that normally connect to the stud hole in the white 3L half-liftarms so that she'll lie flat and you can see the underlying structure.

The only thing that may not be obvious from this is where the wire goes. There is a hole drilled through the center of a 2x3 plate and 1x2 jumper plate, and the wire goes through that hole and the black 1x1 round brick to the right of it. The bulb of the LED sits behind the pearl gold 1x1 round plate, to which the black Technic connector between the two white half-liftarms attaches.

Hex Stands - compatibility

Hex Stands - compatibility

The hex stands--both the 2S and 4S versions--are exactly one plate tall, and from flat to flat are exactly three studs long. As you can see, they can be stacked with plates and used as a building element--everything lines up.

The only significant limitation is that since the angled sides lack the (horribly ugly) sawtooth gaps typical of wedge plates, those sides can't be fitted over studs--you'd need to use tiles beneath those edges, like you would with many of the wing plates.

Since the primary purpose of these stands is for gaming and display, that's a compromise I'm willing to accept for the sake of aesthetics.

Hex Stands with microspace

Hex Stands with microspace

Fantasy RPGs aren't the only kind of tabletop game that uses hex maps by a long shot. Space combat simulation is another popular genre--Starfleet Battles is the first that comes to mind for many people, but there are others as well.

This is an example of how the hexagonal minifig stands can easily be adapted for microspace. From left to right: Blacktron fighter with health and power tokens, #30053 Venator-class Star Destroyer (TLC) with squadron/class markings, Space Police frigate with fire/damage token.

Zimos (Saints Row 3)

Zimos (Saints Row 3)

Stuck at home sick today. So it seems fitting to pass the time with a little sick humor. And there isn't much in the video game world these days more sick and wrong than Saints Row: The Third (NSFW video warning).

He's not perfect, and won't be unless I decide to customize him and come up with a jacket for him, but it's striking just how close you can get using only purist parts. It's like those Brick Daddy parts were made for him.

Best character in the Saints Row series. Ever.
