ice storm 2012

ice storm 2012

An image from our recent ice storm. We had no power for 3 days and lost the tops out of two pine trees. The cedar trees seemed to make it through the storm the best. The aspen type trees did the worst. I'm not sure what the trees are in this image... maybe red alder which is very common.

There was a lot of damage to the ornamental plum trees in some areas but all 5 of ours made it through with no damage (one fell completely over, but we were able to prop it back up). Interestingly the dogwood, ceanothus, mexican orange, Pieris bushes & Nandina all basically fell over and froze to the ground, but they all sprang back up without any damage. The ceanothus is not as tall as it used to be... and is a little wider too. Hopefully it will regain its former shape as I liked it better before.

I read that when the plants are frozen you shouldn't touch them as the ice actually provides support for the plant.

Lots more images below.....
