Project52: Portrait of a Stranger: Burn Crew

Project52: Portrait of a Stranger: Burn Crew

While sessing out a potential photo shoot I came across these gentlemen doing their job. The are local firefighters that are helping reduce fuel loads in public parks. As a portrait you normally light the face and background is secondary. That's all opposite here. I was asked to make sure their faces are not identifiable and it worked out nicely since the setting sun and smoke filled the image. It's a true environmental portrait where the people/land stewards gain character through their work and the sense of place around it.
Hope you enjoy it.

Project 52: Vision Statement

Project 52: Vision Statement

I'm restarting Don Giannatti's Project 52 this year. I enjoyed it for all it was worth last year, but failed to fully commit. I'm hoping for a better show this year! Here's assignment 1:

My Vision for my photography - I am a botanist and restoration ecologist by training and desire. I want other people to get hooked on nature like I am. At minimum, I want them to at least take a second, closer look at our plants, dirt and birds alike. It's truly amazing how much richer every day is when ecology and nature is on your radar. That said, we need to conserve those places that give us access to these feelings of wonderment and peace. Therefore, my vision is to create engaging and interesting photographs about conserving and stewarding our natural resources. I want to celebrate conservation and make the science of ecology accessible through images.

Pictured: Silver bush lupine seedling at Point Molate, CA. A place that was threatened by a casino. Now it needs a plan and vision itself. Notice all the browns, greys, greens and yellows as this habitat awakens and starts to grow into the warmer summer months.

Love letter from the future from Homo destructis

Love letter from the future from Homo destructis

Found object.

I think it's a love letter of sorts. Or maybe it's that dreaded junior high school "break-up" note.

Given all the ridiculous posturing that's been ensuing in Washington, I can't help but think this letter is for all of us. Junior high school seems to be the appropriate grade level. We have regressed. Our leaders traded our values for dollar signs, debt notes, make pretend monopoly money. Enter Homo destructis.

Where did the honorable, reasonable discussion go? Let me tell you where they went. Into political security for the ruling class. It's no secret that a country that's in debt has decreasing political options. These options continue to decrease as debt increases. As we fall further into debt, we become more reliant on large scale financial decisions which can only be executed by a government or ruling class or dictator. Individuals become more and more powerless because the scale of the issue makes it inaccessible but to only a few. Those few know what they're doing as Americana stands bickering on the sidelines. The debt "debate" is nothing more than a love letter to the American people reminding them of how little influence they actually have.

Here's what the love letter says - Dear America. You love me (money) and you can't break up with me no matter how much I make you ache.

When will we ditch the dollar for a currency that values humanity, in no certain terms?

Strobist info - single Canon 580 at 1/16 power at a plane normal to the dollar bill.

Lonesome soldier

Lonesome soldier

A view from Mt. Ham early in the morning on June 18th. This was for the Transit and Trails ride I photographed. Funny, this was a picture I almost tossed. Then I looked again - the exposure is 1/25 of a second, lens wide open at 2.8, ISO as high as the NASDAQ (2500). Garbage shot until I worked with the grain and light in Lightroom. I'm pretty happy with the feeling here. Filmy, if you will. The lonesome soldier really fits the mood. See more from this ride (like alot more) at the blog .
Who knows, maybe I'll think its garbage again tomorrow am...
