Chyrsaora melanaster

The lacy oral arms in the center are used for feeding and may extend for 20' (6 m). The oral arms are surrounded by thread-like tentacles equipped with thousands of microscopic projectile barbs that sting and paralyze prey such as small fish. The sting is quite painful to humans.

The blubber jelly is found near the sea bottom in coastal waters. The sun's rays fuel the growth of algae on which the jelly thrives. Its overall coloration is due to symbiotic algae that live in its tissues.
