Halong Bay

Halong Bay

Halong Bay is a very popular side trip for those visiting Hanoi, Vietnam. It's a 3 1/2 hour drive between the capital city and this bay, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Halong Bay contains almost 2,000 limestone karst islands. There are a few islands with lodging for tourists, but primarily the islands are uninhabited, largely due to their topography. There aren't many flat areas to develop, and very few natural sand beaches. The view is striking, however. For those who have been to Thailand's Phang Nga or Krabi provinces, it is very similar. Many tourists opt to see the bay aboard

Goan Carnival

Goan Carnival

A Goan carnival takes a different route. But there are some similarities between the two. The Portuguese introduced carnival to the Goans, but if the Goans have missed out on the Brazilian connection, the link has become complete this year with the Brazilians gripping the Goans with their creative talents and dancing skills. In an historic description, the Brazilians made their entry into a Goan carnival celebration first, gracing the Goan float parade.

No near-nudes are tolerated in conservative India and that is the message for the Brazilian samba schools. The Goan carnival organising committee has a set dress code for dancers and participants of the float parade over the years. The organisers have the right to remove any skimpy dressed individual from the parade.

Way back in the 80’s, the dress code stirred up a controversy when the float parade saw skimpy dressed girls taking part in the float parade. The dress issue, which was taken by the church, was very strongly criticised, and with the Catholic Church enjoying a strong mass base support in the 40 per cent Christian populated state, the then organisers imposed certain dress code restrictions on the participants.
