The Jade Vine - Cairns Botanical Gardens (Strongylodon macrobotrys)
This vine is a tropical rainforest species originally from the Philippines, and has aquamarine coloured flowers, sharing that feature with only two other plants in the world. It is an evergreen vine with thick, woody stems that can reach lengths of 25 metres in good conditions. Vines will not tolerate frosts and the growing temperature must not drop under 15 C (59 F)
Flowering normally takes place from Spring to early Summer but this is not always adhered to. The vine in Cairns is just ending flowering and it is mid winter! Flowering can be irregular. Flowers are blue/green and pea shaped, each flower being 7 - 13 cm long and on large hanging clusters up to 1.5 metres in length. It is often grown on a pergola which allows dozens of pendulous blooms to appear like they are cascading from the top. The one in the Cairns Botanical Gardens grows on an overhang on the side of the toilet block.
Pollination is thought to be by birds but seed growth is not good. In botanical propagation, cuttings are successful. I will post more images next time.

weird color for a flower in nature.
You were right about the larvae. Is a kind of flying monsters, altough I don't think these are the stinging ones.

WEIRD color. Does it have to have something to do with dim light?
emblatame (Ron) (47 months ago | reply)
A good question but I don't think so. When this one is growing, it is sheltered but some is exposed and the light in the tropics can be quite bright even in overcast conditions.

I could get the desired seedlings in December if Alfonso is in the Philippines. His chances increase if he lives near Los Baños, Laguna.
